A Life-Changing Discovery
When the president of Sanctuary Rescue, based in Midlothian, Virginia, received an unexpected email about a newborn pit bull without a nose, her curiosity was instantly piqued. The breeder, inexperienced with such a unique case, entrusted the 20-hour-old puppy to the rescue the very next day, hoping for a better chance for the little one.
Sanctuary Rescue, a small foster-based organization, was the perfect place for the puppy, now named Goosie. Goosie’s air passages were located in the roof of her mouth, and she was also diagnosed with pituitary dwarfism, meaning she would always retain her puppy-like appearance.
“She literally went everywhere with me for the first five weeks,” Adri shared. Goosie’s feisty nature was evident as she would wiggle to the top of the tote bag, ready for any adventure.
Goosie defied expectations by continuing to drink from a bottle until she was 15 weeks old, well beyond the usual four weeks. Her resilience and spirit were apparent from the start.
Overcoming Challenges
In her early months, Goosie faced several health scares, including instances where she became so ill that hospitalization was necessary. She spent time in the ICU on multiple occasions, which was a worrying time for Adri and the rescue team.
Despite these challenges, Goosie’s determination never wavered. Just days after being discharged from the hospital, she would be back on her paws, ready to face the world with her usual zest for life.
Adri marveled at Goosie’s resilience, stating, “Really, she deserves all the credit. Every doctor she has seen is completely blown away by her.” Goosie’s ability to bounce back amazed everyone who met her.
This little puppy’s spirit was indomitable, and she quickly became a beloved member of the rescue, showing that her differences were just part of what made her special.
Growth and Independence
Although it took time, Goosie eventually proved all the doubters wrong by weighing in at five whole pounds! This milestone was a triumph for everyone at the rescue and marked a significant step in her development.
With her newfound weight, Goosie’s personality blossomed. She became a little diva, independent and playful. She adored interacting with other animals, often chasing them around with boundless energy.
Her playful nature extended to play-fighting with cats and Adri’s large dog, who weighed a hefty 96 pounds. Goosie’s small size never stopped her from having fun and making friends.
Many people might not see her as an adult pit bull, but to those who know her, Goosie is much more than her appearance. She embodies strength and joy.
A Heartwarming Reminder
Goosie continues to thrive in the loving environment of Sanctuary Rescue, thanks to the unconditional love and dedication of Adri and the team. Their care has allowed her to grow and flourish against all odds.
This story serves as a powerful reminder that every dog, regardless of their appearance, has a heart big enough to love unconditionally. Their spirit and capacity for joy deserve our greatest admiration.
“There’s nothing cuter to me than a tiny pit bull puppy,” Adri said, reflecting the sentiment of many who have come to love Goosie. “I just thought she was the greatest thing I’d ever seen!”
Goosie’s journey is a testament to the resilience of animals and the transformative power of love and care. Her story is an inspiration to all who believe in second chances.
