An Unlikely Heroine
Dogs need love and care from their humans to thrive, especially when they are new mothers. Sadly, not everyone understands this. Employees at One of a Kind Pet Rescue in Akron, Ohio, encountered a heart-wrenching case of abandonment when a mother dog was left behind.
Her only “crime” was giving birth to twelve puppies, a number that overwhelmed her owners. This selfless mother found herself and her newborns deserted, left to fend for themselves.
Upon hearing about this tragic situation, Tanya Jonda, the executive director of the rescue, felt compelled to intervene. “I couldn’t turn my back on them,” she said.
When they arrived at the rescue, the stark contrast was evident. The mother was emaciated, flea-ridden, and blind in one eye, yet her puppies were healthy. This was a testament to her extraordinary care despite her own suffering.
Life-Saving Care
To rehabilitate this family, the rescue needed a massive amount of resources: “26 vaccines, 26 de-worming treatments, one heartworm test for mom, 13 spay/neuter surgeries, 13 flea/tick preventions, 13 heartworm preventions, 13 microchips, and one rabies vaccine for mom.”
Thankfully, the rescue’s dedication, coupled with generous donations, ensured the family’s recovery. The puppies blossomed into healthy, joyful little beings, while the mother’s heart healed as she watched them thrive.
Before long, the puppies were ready for adoption. Six of them quickly found loving homes, bringing joy to their new families.
Meanwhile, the mother and the remaining pups awaited their turn. Despite the wait, hope never faded. The rescue’s efforts ensured a happy ending was in sight.
