As a couple trekked deeper into the California woods, they were unaware of the heartwarming surprise awaiting them.
Midway through their hike, they heard peculiar sounds emerging from the creek and decided to investigate.
To their amazement, they found a mama dog giving birth to adorable puppies by the creek.
A Loving Foster Home
The couple quickly transported the mama dog, Ruby, and her three puppies to a nearby shelter. Within eight days, Hopalong Animal Rescue in Oakland, California, welcomed them.
Thom McCallum, a dedicated foster parent, received a call to care for Ruby and her puppies, Jax, Tito, and Kirby.
McCallum noticed Ruby was shy and extremely fatigued when he went to get them.
Upon arriving home in Berkeley, he ensured Ruby and her pups felt secure and loved.
Ruby was relieved to see her puppies finally experience the warmth of a home. She was a devoted mother, focusing intently on her puppies.
McCallum eagerly awaited the chance to play with the little pups, but they needed their rest first.
He spent significant time bonding with Ruby, who gradually allowed him to pet and play with her.
Gaining Ruby’s Trust
Ruby began to lower her defenses as she observed McCallum’s care for her and her babies. Her foster dad was thrilled that Ruby started to trust him.
“Ruby is finally asleep in my lap, and my heart is so full. The end of such a lovely day I didn’t expect,” McCallum shared on Instagram.
Three weeks later, Jax, Kirby, and Tito no longer needed constant sleep and became energetic. They eagerly explored the house and played with their toys.
The pups often showed their affection by licking their foster dad’s face.
McCallum cherished his time with Ruby and her puppies. During walks, he would place them in a wagon, and they were happiest playing outside.
Ruby And Her Pups Get Their Happy Ending
Over time, Ruby grew attached to McCallum, wanting to be with him constantly. They became inseparable friends and formed a strong bond.
McCallum knew he couldn’t part ways with Ruby.
“She loves it here. I love being with her, and I think I’m the best home for her.”
Once Ruby’s puppies were old enough for adoption, they found their forever homes. Now, the pups enjoy their lives in California.
McCallum’s neighbor adopted Tito, allowing the sweet pup to spend ample time with Ruby.
McCallum and Ruby share a deep bond. He continues fostering with Hopalong Animal Rescue, and Ruby, a compassionate and loving pup, assists her dad with his foster fur babies.
It’s heartwarming to see Ruby and her puppies living happily surrounded by caring families.
