“Crews performed a permit-required confined space entry and lowered a rescuer to the dog using rope systems,” they shared in a Facebook post about the harrowing rescue that lasted just over an hour. The dog, initially anxious, calmed down when she sensed the rescuer’s presence. This cooperation was vital in securing her safely.
The firefighters managed to secure the dog with a harness, and she was brought to the surface without any issues. The successful completion of this mission was a testament to their skill and dedication, and they confirmed, “The dog was secured and brought up to the surface without issue.”

Once Rilee was safely above ground, her gratitude was palpable. She wasn’t shy about showing her immense appreciation to her rescuers. “Once the dog emerged from the mine, she happily greeted all of the rescuers individually, as if to say, ‘Thank you!’” Poganski noted.
Rilee’s rescue was nothing short of miraculous. Apart from a few minor injuries, she emerged from the ordeal nearly unscathed. Her mother, Kimberlee Adams Norwood Mickelson, was overjoyed and expressed her heartfelt thanks. “I’m forever grateful for the effort, care, and concern these guys had and for risking their own to save my Rilee!” she posted on Facebook.
Kimberlee’s gratitude resonated deeply with the rescuers, reminding them why they are passionate about their work. The joy of saving a life, especially one so innocent and vulnerable, reaffirmed their commitment to their duty.
