A Chilling Discovery
On a bitterly cold January day in St. Louis, the Stray Rescue of St. Louis team made a startling discovery. While checking an abandoned house, they found a dog chained in the backyard, shivering from the freezing temperatures. The once-loved pet was now left to endure the harsh cold alone.
The sight was truly heartbreaking: the dog was tethered to a doghouse with frozen water, shivering uncontrollably on the frosty ground. The rescuers could hardly believe what they were seeing. “The cold wind howled, and just a few moments outside were unbearable,” they shared on Facebook, expressing their shock and dismay at the cruelty.
Donna Lochmann, one of the dedicated rescuers, couldn’t hold back her tears as she freed the dog from its chains with bolt cutters. “Why someone felt you deserved to suffer with that huge chain is one of the world’s greatest mysteries. You’re free,” the SRSL team wrote, capturing the emotional moment.
Once free, the dog, now named Eskimo Joe, greeted Donna with a wagging tail and pressed his body against her in gratitude. Despite his ordeal, Eskimo Joe’s eyes sparkled with hope, realizing he was finally being rescued.
A New Beginning
Following his rescue, Eskimo Joe received a thorough checkup from the veterinary team. Unfortunately, he tested positive for heartworm, but the good news is that it’s a treatable condition with proper medication. The SRSL team was relieved that Eskimo Joe’s suffering would soon come to an end.
Eskimo Joe’s gentle demeanor quickly won the hearts of everyone he met. He was placed in a loving foster home where he could start his recovery. His foster mom couldn’t stop praising him, “He is the most gentle soul I have ever met. He is crate trained, potty trained, and loves to go for walks.”
Eskimo Joe’s transformation was incredible. He no longer resembled the shivering, abandoned dog found in the yard. His foster family showered him with love and care, helping him regain his strength and spirit.
Although Eskimo Joe is still waiting for his forever home, he’s enjoying the love and comfort of his foster family. “He’s genuinely curious about the world around him and will need walks and time outside to observe now that he’s free from his chain,” his foster mom added.
A Future Full of Hope
Eskimo Joe’s story highlights the incredible work done by the Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Their dedication and compassion have given this sweet dog a second chance at life. As Eskimo Joe continues his journey to find a forever home, he’s already touched the hearts of many.
His foster mom stays optimistic, saying, “Let’s find his forever home, he’s so ready.” With such a loving personality, it’s only a matter of time before Eskimo Joe finds the perfect family to call his own.

Isn’t it suspicious that the dog tested positive for heartworm after being rescued? 🤔

Eskimo Joe’s story really touched my heart. Is there any way to donate directly to his care?

How can people be so cruel to leave a dog in such conditions? Thank you SRSL for rescuing him!
