One day, a woman from Southeast Missouri was driving when she noticed what she initially thought was a worn-out wig lying on the road. She felt something was off and decided to pull over for a closer inspection.

Stepping out of her car, she was stunned to find that the ‘wig’ was actually a dog in distress, completely immobile and in terrible condition. The shocking discovery prompted her to immediately seek help from Mac’s Mission, a local rescue organization.

When the dog reached the care of Rochelle Steffen, the mission’s director, she was briefed on the dire state of the animal. Steffen remarked, “It made complete sense that she looked like a wig or lump of hair in the middle of the road to the finder, and not a dog.”

The woman had honked, but the dog did not budge. Realizing the gravity of the situation, she carefully picked up the helpless creature and took her along, determined to find assistance as soon as possible.

A Sad, But Optimistic Dog

Now named Pear, the dog exhibited a sense of relief as she understood she was finally receiving the help she desperately needed. It took over an hour to shave off her matted fur and clean her up, revealing the true extent of her injuries.

Steffen noted, “She never made a peep or moved the entire time. She was so sad, or maybe she was happy that she was getting loved on.” Pear nestled into Steffen’s arms after her bath, resting her head on her lap and taking a deep breath.

The following day, Pear was taken to the vet for a thorough examination to ensure all her injuries were treated. The medical team was hopeful, stating that with proper care, she would recuperate in a few weeks and be ready for adoption.
