A Startling Discovery in the Woods
As a Good Samaritan was strolling through the Frank Niederwerfer Wildlife Sanctuary in Connecticut, unexpected barking broke the tranquility of the woods. Driven by curiosity, they found an abandoned, five-year-old dog tied to a tree, his eyes pleading for help. The Samaritan couldn’t leave him there, so they liberated the pup and led him to the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter (TRACS) in South Windsor.
The dog, initially calm and well-mannered, quickly won the hearts of the shelter staff. They decided to rename him from Kobe to Obie, hoping this new identity would help him leave his troubled past behind. The shelter began to share Obie’s story and photos on social media, praying that someone would open their heart and home to him.
Obie’s charm did not go unnoticed. Calls flooded the shelter, with concerned individuals inquiring about his well-being. He received a bath, and as the shelter shared on Facebook, “His eyes are almost healed, and he is learning manners and personal space.” Obie basked in the love and attention from everyone he met.
Obie’s health also saw significant improvement. He was put on medication that cleared his eye and skin irritations, received a comprehensive vet checkup, was neutered, vaccinated, had blood work done, and was microchipped. With each passing day, he grew healthier and more ready for his new life.
Obie’s Journey to a New Home
Once Obie was healthy and content, the shelter announced he was ready for adoption. They shared, “Obie loves being loved on, and is learning so much from his weekly training sessions.” The staff had high hopes of finding the perfect home for him, where he could be the center of attention.
However, they noted that Obie has some unique needs. He is still wary of men and would thrive best in a female-only household. Despite his anxiety and ongoing lessons in leash manners, Obie is eager to be part of a family and is determined to be the best companion possible.
If you feel your home could be the loving environment Obie needs, you are encouraged to reach out to the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter for adoption details. This sweet boy is waiting for a family to call his own.
The Fate of Obie’s Previous Owner
In a separate development, the South Windsor Police Department reported that Obie’s former owner, a 26-year-old woman, came forward and was arrested. She faces charges of animal cruelty and tethering a dog to a stationary object. Released on a $5,000 bond, she is due in court soon.
This incident serves as a reminder: our furry friends deserve compassion. If you can no longer care for your pet, please take them to a shelter instead of abandoning them. Let’s ensure every animal finds the love and care they deserve.

Can you post more pics of Obie? I’d love to see how he’s doing now!

Why was the previous owner only released on a $5,000 bond? That’s not enough!

Does Obie get along well with other pets? I’m considering adoption.

How can someone just abandon a dog like that? People can be so cruel!
