An Unexpected Morning Discovery
Following a turbulent night in San Antonio, staff at SA Animal Care Services arrived to a baffling scene – a large green tarp abandoned in their parking lot. With concern and curiosity, they braved the rain-soaked tarp. What they uncovered left them momentarily heartbroken.
Three pairs of frightened eyes stared back at them. Underneath the tarp, two German Shepherds and a Chihuahua were found, shivering and bewildered. The poor dogs had been left to endure the storm without any protection.
Public relations manager Lisa Norwood shared with The Dodo, “We felt a mix of sadness and frustration. The recent storms had been severe, and the dogs must have been extremely scared.” She described the fear these animals must have felt amidst the heavy rain and the constant traffic noise.
Acting swiftly, the team called for additional help to transport the drenched and terrified dogs into the shelter. They immediately provided warmth, food, and water to bring some comfort to these abandoned pups.
Rescue and Recovery
These three dogs were given names to start their journey to recovery. The German Shepherds were called Peaches and Cyrus, and the Chihuahua was named Gabby. Each dog had their own way of coping with the traumatic experience.
Norwood mentioned, “Peaches and Gabby were a bit more relaxed, but Cyrus was deeply impacted by the ordeal and needed more time to adjust.” The trauma had left Cyrus particularly shaken, and he required extra care to feel safe again.
San Antonio faces a growing issue with stray animals, leading to overcrowded shelters struggling to accommodate abandoned pets. This crisis puts immense pressure on the staff and resources available.
In a social media post, the shelter highlighted their daily challenges: “Innocent pups abandoned… shelter kennels overflowing… This is our reality.” The post shed light on the ongoing struggles faced by the shelter in managing the increasing number of stray animals.
Finding New Homes
The shelter realized that they needed to find permanent homes for the dogs quickly due to their limited capacity. Thankfully, Peaches and Gabby were adopted swiftly, finding families that could provide them with the love and care they deserved.
Cyrus, however, needed more time to heal. To ensure he received the best care, he was transferred to the German Shepherd Rescue of NY, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to saving German Shepherds from euthanasia.
Through this organization, Cyrus had a better chance to find a loving home. The rescue’s Facebook page later shared the good news that Cyrus had been adopted, bringing joy to all who had followed his story.
These dogs’ journey from abandonment to finding their forever homes underscores the importance of rescue efforts. The staff’s dedication and the community’s support made it possible for these animals to recover and experience happiness once more.
A Hopeful Future
We are delighted that Peaches, Gabby, and Cyrus have found their forever homes where they can feel safe and loved. Their story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the compassion of those who care for them.
While this happy ending brings relief, it also serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues faced by animal shelters. The need for responsible pet ownership and support for rescue organizations is critical.
San Antonio Animal Care Services continues to work tirelessly to provide for abandoned animals, but they need the community’s help. Contributions, adoptions, and volunteering are vital to their mission.
We hope that more animals in similar situations can find their way to loving homes. The story of Peaches, Gabby, and Cyrus is a beacon of hope for all abandoned pets waiting for their second chance.

Why would anyone leave dogs out in a storm like that? It’s just cruel.
