If you’ve ever spent time volunteering at a dog shelter, you know how easy it is to fall in love with the furry residents.
Many can relate to the sudden bond that forms when helping these loving creatures, if only for a day.
In a North Carolina shelter, Katherine Ellis experienced this in a way she never expected.
Upon signing up to volunteer, she had no idea it would lead to one of the best decisions of her life.
Then, a life-changing moment occurred.
It Was Just Meant To Be
Katherine and her partner, Jake, visited the Humane Society of Charlotte with a noble goal – to volunteer and foster.
But on her very first day, something extraordinary happened!
While touring the shelter, Katherine saw many hopeful eyes, but one particular pup stood out.
It was little Santiago, the oldest dog at the shelter and often overlooked by potential adopters.

“We had no intention of getting a dog, but on day 1 of volunteering, Jake said, ‘I am not leaving without this dog’,” Kate posted on Instagram.
Within minutes, the couple decided to give this adorable canine a forever home. He welcomed them eagerly, like the sweetheart he is!
In their video, Kate and Jake show how happy little Santiago, now Rookie, was to leave the kennel and roam freely.
Rookie And The Family Rocking Through Life
In just a few days, Jake, Kate, and Rookie became inseparable.
Rookie embraced his new life fully, as if he had always been part of the family. He became the friendliest little fellow, appreciating every moment.
“He is the friendliest, most loving, and fastest learning pup I have ever met. Welcome to the family, Rookie,” wrote Kate.
On their first ride home, the couple made sure to get everything Rookie needed for a comfortable life.
Seeing his reaction upon arriving at a warm home was priceless, and Kate couldn’t be more grateful for that volunteer day.
Even though she never planned to have a dog, her dreams of a tiny, blonde, non-shedding doggo came true in the best way possible.
A New Chapter In Chicago
With each new day, Rookie and his family embarked on new adventures together.
They enjoyed city walks, puppuchino stops, and (sometimes unwanted) baths whenever Rookie needed them.
The family recently moved to Chicago, beginning a fresh chapter in their life.
Rookie now spends his days by his mom and dad’s side, far from the kennel life, enjoying every dog’s dream of a loving home.

This is so sweet, but I hope they were prepared for the commitment. Adopting a senior dog can be challenging.

Did Rookie have any special needs because he was the oldest dog at the shelter?

Wow, what a lucky pup! Wish more people would consider adopting older dogs.
