One such soul, Miley, found herself lying helplessly in the grass near a highway, unable to muster the strength to stand. She, too, awaited the kindness of strangers to rescue her from the brink of despair.
In July 2023, the Stray Rescue of St. Louis received numerous calls about a stray dog along a highway. With the exact location provided, the rescue team sprang into action.
Fearing the dog might bolt at any moment, Donna Lochmann rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, she found the frightened pup lying motionless in the grass, her heart breaking at the sight of the emaciated and exhausted animal.
Lochmann, mindful not to scare the dog further, slowly made her way down the slope. The pup gazed at her with a sorrowful expression, her spirit seemingly broken.
Speaking softly and offering treats, Lochmann gently earned the pup’s trust. The pup, later named Miley Marker, began to wag her tail, recognizing the kindness in her rescuer.
Despite her joy, Miley’s legs wobbled when she tried to stand, demonstrating her profound weakness. Lochmann’s heart ached as she saw Miley’s struggle.

As Lochmann approached to lift Miley, the pup responded with a heartfelt kiss, melting her rescuer’s heart. She carried Miley up the steep incline, receiving kisses all the way, a gesture of gratitude from the pup.
At the Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Miley underwent a thorough medical examination. Her caregivers were dismayed to find that she was ill, having eaten anything she could find on the highway due to starvation.
Lochmann gave Miley a bath, ridding her of fleas, and the grateful pup couldn’t resist giving her rescuer another kiss. Miley’s caregivers were optimistic about her recovery.

Despite her ordeal, Miley remained affectionate, winning the hearts of everyone she met. Her caregivers showered her with love, unable to resist hugging this resilient and loving girl.
Miley thrived under their care, feeling safe and cherished like never before. Her recovery marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
A Bright Future Ahead
Ready for foster care, Miley embarked on a new journey. Her foster family in St. Louis welcomed her warmly, helping her regain her strength and confidence.
They gifted her a red fish toy, which Miley adored and carried everywhere. She gradually relaxed, enjoying the warmth and security of her new home.
Miley’s foster family was captivated by her charm and resilience. She quickly adapted, becoming more energetic and playful.
“Miley is the sweetest, most loving (and goofy) girl. When I am on Zoom meetings for work, Miley usually dozes off at my feet. She will suddenly wake up, jump into my lap at full speed, and start licking my face incessantly,” shared Rachel, her foster mom.
